With race day around the corner, Week 6 of Juniper Kyz brought powerful strides — both on the pavement and in the classroom. From learning about our rights to completing our longest run yet, this week reminded us just how strong and unstoppable this group of young women is becoming.

Stepping Into Double Digits: Our First 10K!

Saturday morning’s practice was a milestone moment — our participants ran their first full 10K in preparation for the Run the Silk Road race. It was no small feat, but the girls tackled it with determination and energy. Watching them finish with smiles, support, and strength was inspiring. Some girls even said they never imagined they could run this far — and now they’re excited to try even more.

After the run, we shifted into a technique and feedback session. Each participant observed a teammate’s running form and offered helpful insights on posture, stride, and breathing. During cool-down, everyone shared one thing they felt proud of and one thing they want to keep improving — practicing reflection and goal-setting.

We ended with a storytelling circle called “Me, Myself, and I.” In pairs, the girls shared their life stories for two minutes each, then rejoined the group to share what they learned about one another. This simple activity brought out surprising moments of vulnerability, laughter, and connection — reinforcing the power of being truly heard.

Educational Spotlight: Gender, Rights & Action

On Wednesday evening, we welcomed a very special guest — Bermet Stakeeva, head of the Forum of Women’s NGOs of Kyrgyzstan. With strength and clarity, Bermet led us through a dynamic session on gender equality, women’s rights, and everyday activism. Topics included:

  • The evolution of women’s rights — both globally and in Kyrgyzstan

  • How patriarchy limits everyone, including men (“men don’t cry”)

  • The difference between sex and gender — and how social norms shape roles

  • Key laws and protections, including:

    • The UN Convention on Equal Remuneration

    • Laws on domestic violence, child marriage, and gender equality in Kyrgyzstan

  • What girls can do: from calling out sexist jokes to knowing their legal rights and where to go for support

The session was empowering and interactive. The girls asked thoughtful questions and reflected on their own experiences, gaining tools and language to better advocate for themselves and others.

Participant Quote of the Week:

“I didn’t know how many rights we actually do have — it made me feel stronger and more aware. I want to share this with my friends.”

Looking Ahead:

We’re heading into our final full week of training before race day, and the excitement is building! The girls are stronger than ever — physically, mentally, and emotionally. We’re looking forward to teaching them how to taper properly before their big race, and of course — our Issyk-Kul road trip to Run the Silk Road! 🚐🏃‍♀️

Thank you for following our journey — stay tuned for Week 7!
